VIEWS OF CHINA
I was not good at making friends with strangers before
I came to China for the first time. I had thought it
would be troublesome to have many friends because
I was free when I was on my own. So at that time, I
thought one or two friends were enough. I had only a
few friends till I came to study in China during the second
year of university. In the eyes of my classmates, I was a spe-
cial girl.
Not long after I arrived in China, I was surprised to find
that the Chinese people are very considerate of Japanese.
ey were warm-hearted and treated me as their friend from

the very beginning. I can make new friends almost wherever
I go. Once when I was buying writing materials at a campus
store, I used English since my Chinese was not good enough.
A Chinese girl saw me and offered help. She became my first
Chinese friend. I also made many friends in English class, in
photo studio, in the Chinese Cheongsam store and on the
train. To be honest, I thought at first that they became my
friends because I was a foreigner and they presumed that I
was rich. Did they make friends with me for some purpose?
I came to realize that it is not true. In a hair salon, I was
deeply impressed by some young hair-dressers. On that day,
it was getting very late when my hair was almost done. e
hairdressers began eating supper beside me and invited me
to join them for free. I was curious about the life of young
people outside campus; so, after that, I often joined them for
dinner or to go out dancing. Once it was very late for me to
leave so I slept in their room. e room was small and there
was only one bed so we three girls slept together. ey often
invite different friends to their home and introduce me to
them, “ is is Yuki, our Japanese friend.” In Japan it would
never happen. First, the shop assistants are very nice in Japan
but they would never invite a customer to have supper to-
gether. Secondly, Japanese would not invite a friend to sleep
overnight unless they had a guest room in their home.
I couldn’t figure out why they would be so friendly. Later
I asked a friend, “Why would you do that?” He said immedi-
ately, “ e more friends, the better.” At that moment, I almost
couldn’t believe my ears. e more friends, the better? Why is
that? I was confused because it had never occurred to me. But
this sentence has stayed in my mind since that moment.
Now I am still studying in China and have had a great
time. Who said I would not like to make friends? Now I
have many friends - old and young, men and women. I often
recall the sentence “ e more friends, the better.”
