EDITOR'S NOTE:
Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the Confucius Institute in Chi-
cago during his state visit to the United States in January this year.
He inspected a Confucius Institute’s Chinese class at Walter Payton
College Preparatory High School, inspected the Confucius Institute
and watched the student’s performance – an American song and a
Chinese dance. During his talk with the teachers and students there, he
invited them to visit China during the summer vacation. At the invita-
tion of President Hu, 26 teachers and students from the high school
visited Beijing July 11-24. The president met with the American guests
at Zhongnanhai. After the stay in Beijing, they continued their trip to
Xi’an, Nanjing, Taizhou and Shanghai.
At the end of their trip, the students wrote to President Hu, express-
ing their gratitude. They also wrote about their deep impression of this
Chinese trip, the change in their views of China and this trip’s in uence
on their future plans. The magazine will publish the students’ letters
of thanks to President Hu Jintao and abstracts of the teachers’and stu-
dents’ letters in this and the two following issues.
