anda fever gripped Japan as two of the cuddly
creatures arrived in Japan from China, with
Tokyo zoo eyeing a visitor boom and the gov-
ernment anticipating improved ties with Beijing.
Panda flags lined streets near Tokyo's Ueno Zoo,
which is to be the home of the pair of five-year-old gi-
ant pandas for the next decade.
One broadcaster, in a report headlined "Pandas
are coming to Ueno!", revealed tidbits about the fluffy
creatures, including that the male, named Bili, is shy
and likes to do things at his own pace, while Xiannu,
the female, is "friendly." Kyodo News, meanwhile,
reported that Bili is "a big eater and sporty, and enjoys
tree climbing, while Xiannu is active and has an affa-
ble nature".
The pandas are to greet the public, with new Japa-
nese names, late March and are expected to boost flag-
ging visitor rates at the zoo.
Around the zoo, shop and cafe owners offered pan-
da-themed foods and products, including bread that
reveals cocoa panda faces when sliced.
"The loaves were sold out in just an hour-and-a-half
after they came out of the oven," said Andersen Bakery
sales woman Mieko Kanayama.

s the Chinese language catches on in ROK, the
kindergartens, which teach Chinese, are becom-
ing increasingly popular. Children start learning
Chinese at an earlier age. A kindergarten headmaster in
Seoul said, “10 years ago, parents would say: ‘What use
is learning Chinese?’ But for two or three years, many
parents have said: ‘They must learn Chinese. It’s good
for them to learn pronunciation and tones while they are
young.’” In the tutoring service market, Chinese is also
popular. Some institutions even combine Chinese educa-
tion with other skills training, like cooking classes given
in Chinese for children.
