On April 7, 47 primary and second-
ary school principals from Scotland
began their trip for the first “Chinese
Bridge” Tour organized by China’s
Hanban. The participants, by visiting
Chinese schools, observing Chinese
classes and meeting with educational
officials and teachers hope to deepen
their understanding of China, Chinese
culture and educational system to pro-
mote lasting, steady and sustainable co-
operation between the Scottish schools
with their Chinese counterparts, as well
as to advance the development of Chi-
nese education in Scotland.
After two days in Beijing, the del-
egation headed to Tianjin and Zhe-
jiang, where they visited local primary
and secondary schools and education
departments. The delegates talked with
teachers and students, observed classes,
and interacted with students to learn
about school education, class design
and teachers’ training. The delegation
also attended a seminar on Scotland-
Zhejiang education partnership, where
they had a positive and pragmatic dia-
logue with principals from 66 primary
and secondary schools in Zhejiang.
For most of the delegates, it was
their first visit to China. They said this
visit helped further their understand-
ing of Chinese national conditions
and during the trip they experienced
the primary and secondary education
situation in China and also established
relationships with Chinese educators.
A delegate from Ayrshire said it was the
first time to visit China and also the
first time to visit a Chinese campus.
The principals expressed their intention
to establish a long-term partnership
with schools in Zhejiang, he said.
So far, LTS Confucius Institute, the
Confucius Institute at University of Ed-
inburgh and 10 Confucius Classrooms
have been set up in Scotland. Besides
the “Chinese Bridge” tour for school
principals, The Learning and Teaching
Scotland also held, in cooperation with
Hanban, “Chinese Bridge" Scotland
Summer Camp for middle school stu-
dents and “Chinese Bridge” training
programs for Chinese language teach-
ers of Scotland.

“Learn Chinese well and make
friends all over the world!” Excited
applause was heard at the Chinese
singing competition in Cambodia,
on the sideline of the Confucius In-
stitute Online promotion event. This
is one of the promotion events that
Confucius Institute Online held for
the first time at 71 Confucius Insti-
tutes in 31 countries during the pe-
riod from November 2010 to March
2011.
To meet the Chinese-learning
demand in all countries, Hanban
(Confucius Institute Headquarters),
launched Confucius Institute On-
line in 2009. A series of worldwide
activities were held concurrently
during the period to strengthen the
relation between Confucius Institute
Online and Confucius Institutes so
as to increase its influence. The com-
petitive Chinese promotion events
covered four aspects: calligraphy and
painting, singing, paper-cutting and
speech making. On-line promotion
activities were also held during that
period.
The promotion activities received
very positive response. The website
saw an increase of almost 30,000
users during the promotion period,
two times more than the same pe-
riod last year. It also recorded more
than 11 million view counts during
that period.
The Confucius Institute Online
has 58 channels, covering five sectors
including Chinese learning, Chinese
culture and teaching resources. Ten
language versions are available now
and over 40 languages will be avail-
able in the future.
