T
o talk about how fate has
brought me and the Chi-
nese language together,
we need to go back ten
years, when I, still a Rus-
sian “f lower bud” [young
girl], was traveling in China on a sum-
mer camp. On a bus, a woman sitting
in front of me was relishing an ear of
corn. Since I had always been allergic
to corn, I was looking at her anxiously,
trying to make sure that the corn was
at a safe distance from me. Noticing
my stare, however, the woman gener-
ously produced another ear of corn
from her bag and gave it to me! I was
dumbstruck, because I was afraid to
eat the corn but was not able to explain
why. Instead, I could only shake my
head and gesticulate. Seeing her disap-
pointed look, I became indescribably
depressed. What I had turned down
was not just an ear of corn, but rather
a heart of gold. I quietly made up my
mind to learn Chinese so that I could
express my feelings to hospitable and
kind Chinese people.
Now I have grown into an ador-
able “fair lady” and found my “Mr.
Right”. Our match was made through
the Chinese language, and everybody
says that we make a perfect couple.

In our daily life, Chinese is also put
to unexpectedly fantastic uses. Once
during a quarrel I said to him: “If I
were afraid of you, I wouldn’t be Hua
Mulan.” He said: “If you were Hua
Mulan, I would be Kungfu Panda.”
Not going to show any sign of weak-
ness, I replied: “If you were Kungfu
Panda, I would be Sun Wukong!” I
had underestimated my boy friend’s
prowess, for he said: “Then I would be
Rulai Buddha. No matter how good
you are with what you do, you still
won’t be able to escape from my palm!”
I had no more words to fall my back
on. Alright, alright, let’s agree that
“peace is precious”. Feng Xiaogang’s
film
If You Are the One has said it well
:
What is the most precious thing in the
twenty-first century? Harmony!
While the grim clouds of the f i-
nancial crisis throw their shadows on
countries of the world, China alone
prospers in sunny weather. Likewise,
my boyfriend and I are full of confi-
dence in our future. On the earth, we
want to be like two trees whose trunks
and branches grow together; in the
skies, we are like a pair of Biyi birds [a
legendary bird species whose males and
females, each having only one wing,
the males on one side and the females
on the other, stick themselves together
and flap their wings as if they were one
bird] flitting back and forth to contrib-
ute to the harmonious coexistence of
China and the rest of the world.
