Ginger Lumpkin (Vice Principal, Walter
Payton College Preparatory High School)
China is a rising power in the world but
it retains its own history, tradition and mode
of development. It has been continuously
rising in the fields of economic development
and science and technology. I see harmoni-
ous relationships among nature, modernity,
history and the contemporary life style.

Before I came to China, I knew very little
about this country except the names of the lead-
ers. From this trip, I realize that great changes
have taken place since the People’s Republic of
China was established in 1949. This trip also
helps improve my understanding of Chinese
culture. I will never forget the people I met, the
scenes I saw and the things I did here.

I have seen changes in the eyes of the students and teachers and through the con-
versations with them. The Vice Principal of Walter Payton College Preparatory High
School, Ginger Lumpkin, hopes her son can study at a Chinese university. Chicago
Community Trust President Terry Mazany, after a meeting at Zhongnanhai, told me
that Sino-American friendship is flourishing and fruitful. I believe the American teach-
ers will include what they’ve learned from this trip to China in their teaching, which
will influence the American youths from generation to generation. President Hu said
the youth are the hope for good Sino-American relations. These teachers play an im-
measurably positive role in developing the relationship between the two countries.

I witnessed the rapid economic development, the gov-
ernment’s great attention to education and science and
technology, and its open attitude towards international
cooperation in this country which is full of enthusiasm and af-
fection. I am so happy to see that both Chinese and American
students are contributing to friendship between the two coun-
tries. I hope the fruitful results of our visit will bring long-
lasting friendship. The students and teachers in China and
the United States will learn from each other with the
friendship enhanced from generation to generation.
