topics including Chinese
teaching materials, teachers,
teaching and examinations.

conference, Ms. Liu hailed
the role of the Nat iona l
Chinese Language Confer-
ence in promoting Chinese
education in America and
applauded the efforts of the
American people in promot-
ing Chinese language educa-
tion and cultural exchanges
between the two countries.
She stressed that the China-
U.S. relationship is among
the most energetic and influ-
ential bilateral relationships
in the world. The joint state-
ment released by Chinese
President Hu Jintao and U.S.
President Barack Obama
in January this year has
included people-to-people
exchanges between the two
countries to the China-U.
S. strategic framework for
the first time, which is far-
reaching and pragmatically
significant. Chinese educa-
tion is an important part of
people-to-people exchanges,
she said, adding that, for
China, promoting Chinese
language education is aimed
at boosting understanding,
mutual trust and coopera-
tion with the world. She an-

offer more assistance to Chi-
nese language education in
The conference for Confucius
Cla s srooms in the United States
was held on Apri l 16-17, 2011 in
San Francisco. Almost 200 people,
including the directors of over 150
Confucius Classrooms and over 30
Confucius Institutes as well as repre-
sentatives from the Asia Society and
College Board.
Addressing the opening ceremony
of the conference, Ms. Xu Lin, Di-
rector-General of Hanban and Chief
Executive of the Confucius Institute
Headquarters, said that Confucius
Classrooms in the United States have
made great progress and remarkable
achievements in the past four years
and also recorded very important ex-
perience. She noted that the Confu-
cius Classroom is still at the prelimi-
nary stage of development and faces
many challenges.
The participants had extensive and
in-depth discussions on inter-Con-
fucius Classroom coordination and
cooperation, integration of Confucius
Classrooms into local regular educa-
tional systems, Confucius Institute
Headquarters’ support to the devel-
opment of Confucius Classroom, and
other issues.
They said setting up Confucius
Cla ssrooms under Confucius In-
stitutes is conducive to linking the
Chinese education of K-12 and uni-
versities, which is also expected to
optimize and integrate the Chinese
educationa l resources in universi-
ties and therefore serve as the most
important approach to Confucius
Classroom’s development. They sug-
gested strengthening the integration
and resource-sharing of all Confu-
cius Classrooms across the country,
sharing successful operational and
management experience and seeking
solutions to common issues.
In order to promote the integra-
tion of Confucius Classroom into
local regular educational system, the
participants recommended pushing
forward policy support from superior
departments, especially the support
from school district heads and prin-
cipals, and recognition and support
from loca l communit ies and stu-
dents’ parents. Efforts should also be
made to integrate teaching Chinese
language and culture into the main
curriculum in U.S. schools. Finally,
effective communication mechanisms
should be set up with teacher unions
and educational authorities to create
favorable living, cultural and working
conditions for local Chinese language
teachers and Chinese guest teachers

the United States, including
training more local teachers,
initiating further exchanges
of teachers and students
in the two countries, and
cooperating in research on
Chinese language teaching
methods. She encouraged
U.S. educators of Chinese
language to continue their
work to enhance the un-
derstanding and friendship
between the two peoples
while exploring Chinese ed-
ucation, practicing cultural
exchanges and promoting
China-U.S. friendship.
