INTRODUCTION
China and France are large countries with long histories, one repre-
senting the historical and cultural tradition of the East, the other repre-
senting that of theWest. The di erences between these two traditions
are evident in habits and customs of daily life as well as, on a deeper
level, in their di erent systems of thought, ways of thinking and value
systems. French people often say: “To compare is not reason”, because
when we compare we tend to make judgments on the basis of our
own opinions and experience. Perhaps the purpose of comparing is
to seek common ground. The following is a discussion by Confucius
Institute directors in France about comparisons of Chinese and French
cultures. In simple and interesting ways, these directors reveal the dif-
ferences between Chinese and French cultures from perspectives that
are thought-provoking. No culture is better than another cul-
ture; the important step to take is to bring peoples closer.
We have received a rich array of articles. Due to
limited editorial space, we are publishing them in
two consecutive issues. The current issue includes
articles by Blaise Thierree, Director of the Confucius
Institute in Brittany, and Chen Mengwen, Direc-
tor of the Confucius Institute at the University of
Poitiers.
